In 2025, accommodation organizations provided 86,685 overnight stays for 1,072 displaced families from Catalonia, the rest of Spain, and abroad. Despite these efforts, 259 requests could not be accommodated due to a lack of available housing, a 40% increase compared to the previous year.
21 May 2026.- Fundación Xana took part today in a joint press conference with other social organizations in Barcelona to highlight an increasingly concerning reality: the growing number of families in need of temporary accommodation in order to receive specialized medical treatment in the city, and the lack of available resources to meet all requests.
During 2025, the participating accommodation organizations collectively provided 86,685 overnight stays to displaced patients and family members, supporting a total of 1,072 families from different parts of Catalonia, the rest of Spain, and abroad. Despite this collective effort, 259 requests could not be met due to the lack of available accommodation, representing a 40% increase compared to the previous year.
The press conference brought together several organizations working to guarantee a dignified and supportive stay for families facing complex medical situations, including Fundación Xana, which has been an active part of this support network since this year. The other participating organizations were Fundació Hospitalitat Mare de Déu de Lourdes, Fundació Jubert Figueras, Fundació Josep Carreras against Leukemia, Fundación Inés Arnaiz, Fundació d’Oncologia Infantil Enriqueta Villavecchia, Associació Catalana del Fetge, Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya (AFANOC), Casa Ronald McDonald, and Fundació Privada Petit Món.

Essential Support for Families
Many families are forced to travel to Barcelona for weeks or even months in order to access highly specialized treatments. In many cases, these stays involve a significant emotional and financial burden, especially when hospital admissions are long or uncertain.
Currently, the organizations manage 55 accommodation facilities and 156 rooms across the Barcelona metropolitan area. These apartments and support spaces allow patients and caregivers to stay close to hospitals in appropriate conditions, preventing situations of vulnerability and reducing the financial impact of hotels or temporary rentals. Fundació Xana has three accommodations in Barcelona to offer to families.
The average stay in these facilities is 33 days, although some cases extend for several months, particularly during transplant processes or oncology treatments.
The Need to Strengthen Social Resources
The organizations jointly called for increased resources and institutional support to ensure that no family is forced to give up being close to their loved one for financial reasons.
Barcelona has established itself as a leading medical and scientific hub, with increasingly advanced and personalized treatments. However, this progress also creates new social needs linked to medical travel and access to affordable and suitable accommodation.
At Fundació Xana, we will continue working to provide support and guidance to families going through especially difficult moments, and to help build a more humane, close, and accessible model of care for everyone.
